Congratulations to Our Aveda Artist Winners

Aveda Artists win and wow at the 2016 North American Hairdressing Awards

We proudly congratulate Jesse Ervin (above) Aveda Institute Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, for his win of Student Hairstylist of the Year.

and Cassandra Clark, Tangerine Salon & Spa, Dallas, Texas, for her win of Nail Professional of the Year– all Aveda Network winners at the 27th Annual 2016 North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA), which is produced by the Professional Beauty Association (PBA).

NAHA took place in front of a crowd of more than 3,000 beauty professionals in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, and is considered the leading photographic hairstyling and beauty competition in North America.

Before the Aveda Artists celebrated their wins, Aveda Global Creative Director Antoinette Beenders presented Cheeky Pop, a five model theatrical presentation. See all the details below:

An artistic tribute to the heritage that is Aveda —Beauty, Wellness, Environment, Fashion and Art— Beenders’ Cheeky Pop was inspired by a recent exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London that showcased works of art as influenced by iconic pop artist Andy Warhol and the overall pop art movement.

The sculptural hair styles featured a graduated styling technique that Beenders noted “provides an instant hair cut without scissors.” All models displayed Aveda Hair Color looks created by Ian Michael Black, Global Artistic Director, Hair Color, that paired beautifully with the architectural, couture hair styles.

“‘Cheeky Pop’ is part pop art, part anime and a whole lot of Aveda,” Beenders said. “I wanted to present something joyful and beautiful, which is what we need right now, a moment of happiness and pure playfulness. The looks were all about a happy lightness, from the vibrant Aveda Hair Color to the fashion-forward custom-made organic cotton dresses.”

For the Cheeky Pop makeup, Janell Geason, Aveda Global Artistic Director for Makeup, created looks that corresponded with the theme as pops of color shown brightly on the models lids and lips through their beautiful, fresh skin.

The intricate styles were created by taking small sections of hair, winding them through u-pins and then heat setting the pins with a flat iron. Once the hair was released, Antoinette gently brushed out strands and formed the shapes with heat and Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray.

For styling, Antoinette was assisted by Allen Ruiz, Aveda Global Artistic Director, Hair Styling; Tippi Shorter, Aveda Global Artistic Director, Textured Hair; Bea Watson, Global Educator, Hair Styling; and Aveda Editorial Artist Robert Grimes, 2015’s NAHA Hairstylist of the Year and Contemporary Classic Award winner.
