Paper from Nepal

Explore our holiday gift sets here.

A remarkable Himalayan bush-the Lokta shrub-grows in the under storey of conifers and broad-leaf forests at altitudes exceeding 6500 feet. For thousands of years, its bark has been harvested to produce exceptionablly durable, attractive textured paper.

Local paper makers clean and boil .the bark, creating a pulp. The mash is poured onto screens and dried outdoors. Sheets of paper are then hand-dipped in dye buckets to build color as desired.

The environment benefits, as the shrubs naturally regenerate in a matter of years-sparing the clear cutting of trees.

Find Lokta shrub paper elements in Aveda gift sets, and Aveda gift card envelopes.

Help preserve forests and
build a community in Nepal.

Paper elements in our gift sets-and Aveda gift card envelopes-are handcrafted from the bark of the Lokta shrub that grows miles high in the forests of the Himalayas. The shrub is harvested without destroying the plant stock, by a forest user collaborative helping revive land and improve lives.

What once were over-cut forests in Nepal are owned and managed today by Himalayan Bio Trade Limited, a natural products processing and trading company run by a consortium of forest user groups. Its land management efforts-certified by the worldwide Forest Stewardship Council-help heal forests once near destruction, and are supported by public-private alliances, including planning, training and advising from Aveda.

The exceptionally strong yet soft paper that results provides income to community families. Participating women have a way to support themselves, helping them have a say in their futures for the first time. More men in the region now are able to remain with their families instead of leaving to find work in India.

Today forests are protected, households remain intact and Nepali villages are empowered.

See how these organizations helped Aveda bring the Nepali paper into our 2007 holiday gift sets.
