Is your hair falling out more than normal? Don’t panic! There are many factors that impact how much hair you lose or shed on a daily basis and one of them is the change in seasons. We tapped hair loss expert Dr. Jodi LoGerfo, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Dermatology, to explain more about hair loss and how the invati advanced™ system works to help you keep the hair you have longer.2
“Our hair sheds every day. It’s part of the normal hair cycle,” says Dr. Jodi. Each hair is in one of three phases of growth at any time and eventually sheds from the follicle. She says it’s completely normal to lose 50–100, even 150 hairs a day, but it all depends on how much hair you have to begin with. “For women in particular, hair shedding is extremely stressful,” says Dr. Jodi. “So it’s important to remember that a normal hair cycle includes shedding.”
PHASE 1:
Anagen is the active growth phase and lasts 2–6 years, where hairs grow about one centimeter every 28 days. Typically, 89–91% of your hairs are in this phase at any time.
PHASE 2:
Catagen is a transitional growth phase that lasts about two weeks. Growth stops and the outer root sheath shrinks, attaching to the hair root. About 3% of hairs are in this phase at any time.
PHASE 3:
During the telogen phase, which usually sets in toward the end of summer and beginning of autumn, the hair is resting rather than growing, and so shedding becomes more noticeable. This stage lasts about 100 days and it is normal to shed 50–100 hairs a day.
