ACACIA (ACACIA SENEGAL)

While Ancient Hebrews considered Acacia wood to be sacred, the Aztecs used the gum as both a dye and food, eating the seedpods as an aphrodisiac. Acacia gum adds volume to fine hair in Pure Abundance™ Volumizing Shampoo, Pure Abundance™ Volumizing Clay Conditioner, and Pure Abundance™ Volumizing Hair Spray.

ALOE (ALOE BARBADENSIS)

This red seed pigment (also known as uruku) has long been used in ceremonies to connect with the spirit, and in daily life to offer protection from the elements. Organically grown, to provide color to our Uruku makeup. Annatto oil, also drawn from the Brazilian urukum tree, has been used for centuries to condition hair and skin—and now adds moisture and smoothness to our Uruku formulas.

ANNATTO (BIXZ ORELLANA)

From the nut of the fruit of the Argan tree, which is indigenous to South Morocco, and grows in the arid countryside at the edge of the Sahara Desert. Because of its nutty flavor, argan oil plays a role in traditional Moroccan cuisine. Folk remedies including using argan oil to help protect skin against the harsh conditions of the desert climate. ARGAN (ARGANIA SPINOSA)

Brazil nuts are collected and processed by indigenous peoples in the Tambopata region of the Peruvian Amazon, in a way that discourages unnecessary felling of trees and supports the life of the community. The Brazil nut tree is one of the tallest and oldest trees in the Peruvian jungle—and the source of a rich protein complex used in our Color Conserve™ Strengthening Treatment.

BRAZIL NUT (BERTHOLLETIA EXCELSA)

One of the oldest plants in cultivation, flax seed yields an extract that is a natural holding agent. Used in our Control styling family Confixor™ Liquid Gel. Esteemed in Asia, where its blossoms symbolize love or respect, this uplifting floral infuses our Aveda Love™ Pure-Fume™ family. Also the source of an aromatic, smoothing wax, jasmine is used for our Petal Essence™ eye. and cheek color.

JASMINE (JASMINUN OFFICINALE GRANDIFLORUM)

JOJOBA

Because it so closely resembles the skin's own sebum, this oil is an extraordinarily compatible and effective moisturizer in our All-Sensitive Body Formula and Blue Oil Balancing Concentrate. It also helps smooth hair in formulas like our Damage Remedy Restructuring Conditioner.

Our larch tree extract is salvaged from woodchips created by responsibly sourced lumber processing—which takes protection of ecosystems. soil, water quality, wildlife habitat and tree regeneration into consideration. LICORICE (GLYCYRRHIZA GLABRA)

Also known as "sweet wood," this anti-irritant is in our Hand Relief™ and—for its sweet flavor—Comforting Tea Bags.

Priced for its juicy, sweet inner flesh, mango is considered the apple of the tropical world. But it is the mango's seed that when pressed into a "butter" that melts into skin uses unique fatty acids to help condition and hydrate. MANGO (MANGIFERA INDICA)

One of three ingredients in our unique Brightening Blend. A woody perennial with a high anti-oxidant content, the extract of the mulberry root has been known to contain substances that slow the formation of melanin.

MULBERRY ROOT (MORUS NIGRA)

Produced from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree, the ancient Egyptians embedded Neroli—an "aphrodisiac"—in wax cones worn on the heads of temple dancers. As the cones melted in the heat of the dance, the air filled with revitalizing aroma.

NEROLI (CITRUS AURANTIUM)

Native to the Americas, Passion Fruit grows on a vine and has a touch rind like a pomegranate. We use the oil from the seeds in pure abundance™ style-prep™—it's part of our botanical blend that helps boost volume and thicken fine, limp strands.

PASSION FRUIT (PASSIFLORA EDULIS)

The pomegranate, a Persian native, is one of the world's oldest known fruits. Full of anti-oxidants, it's also a source of Vitamin B and potassium. Pomegranate seed oil in our Nourish-Mint™ Renewing Lip Treatment is high in oleic acid—similar to skin's natural lipids—to help repair the epidermis barrier surface of lips.

POMEGRANATE (PUNICA GRANATUM)

Considered sacred by the Inca Indians for its valuable life-supporting nutrients, quinoa has flourished in the Peruvian Andes for over 5,000 years. Known in Quechua, the language of the Incas, as chisiya mama or "mother grain," quinoa is very rich in protein more than all other grains. Today, Aveda sustainably sources quinoa for the protein in our Damage Remedy™ restructuring hair care.

ROSEMARY (ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS)

Used in ancient times to scent bath water, heal sore gums and whiten teeth, this light, minty oil has an uplifting aroma. Its leaves are often steeped in tea as an herbal remedy for heartburn, nausea and digestive ailments.

Traditionally used for centuries in the South Pacific for soothing dry or irritated skin.

Called "Kanchani," which means "Golden Goddess" in Sanskrit, turmeric has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda — the ancient healing art of India
— to treat many conditions and illnesses. Because of its preservative properties, it was considered more precious than gold, and is widely known as an anti-irritant. Turmeric is one of the powerful ingredients in invati™ solutions for thinning hair.

TURMERIC (CURCUMA LONGA)

Wheat protein is used to help protect hair from heat damage due to styling with blow dryers, irons, curling rods and other hot styling tools. The wheat protein blend is also used in our be curly™ shampoo/conditioner/style prep™ expands when hair is wet and retracts when hair is dry to enhance curl or wave.
