THE ART OF CARING

#BEAUTYHEALS

Tricia Rivas, owner of Trixies Salon in Des Moines, Iowa, certainly has the heart of a true #BeautyHeals leader. A talented Aveda Artist, Tricia has a passion for the haircare industry and an unstoppable drive to give back to her community. These two attributes collided into the development of her incredible nonprofit organization, the Dream Catchers Foundation, that provides salon services for chronically and terminally ill men, women, and children, and to their caregivers— all free of charge.

As Tricia notes on the foundation’s website, ‘when you aren’t feeling your best, it is hard to feel beautiful.’ Making others feel beautiful and taken care of is at the heart of Dream Catchers.

“The idea came from when I was volunteering at Hospice of Central Iowa, cutting patients’ hair,” Tricia says. “I instantly realized how important the services were for the patients and through my time there, I learned that the caretakers needed cuts as well, but no time to go to the salon.”

Tricia rounded up a team of licensed beauty professionals —many of whom worked at Trixies— and together they brought to life the Dream Catchers mission: To rejuvenate the spirit through human touch for men, women, and children. Services include haircuts, massage, facials, manicures and makeup; and are provided complimentary to both the patient and caregiver up to six times a year.

“If I could bottle up what it feels like to give back by using our talents to provide so much love, I would and then I would give that away to everyone because the feeling so special,” Tricia says. “The smiles on their faces at the end of the services honestly makes my heart skip a beat. It's like a feeling you can't really describe until you witness it.”

While giving back, Tricia knows she is on the path that is meant for her. “I've learned that God has a bigger purpose for me and he put me on this journey of being a hairdresser to spread joy in a world that can sometimes be very cruel. I truly believe as hairdressers we have the power to change the world! And I'm beyond lucky to have a staff that believes this as much as I do.”
